Dear Friends and Patrons of Ma-Yi Theater Company,
As we approach the end of an incredible year, Ma-Yi Theater Company is thrilled to announce two groundbreaking productions that exemplify our commitment to centering AANHPI voices and narratives. We invite you to join us in bringing these unique theatrical experiences to life.
SUMO by Lisa Sanaye Dring, directed by Ralph B. Peña, immerses audiences in the intense world of Japanese sumo wrestling. This gripping drama follows two wrestlers on the brink of stardom as they navigate the pressures of tradition, masculinity, and ambition. SUMO delves deep into the human spirit, exploring what it truly means to fight for one’s place in the world.
RHEOLOGY, created and performed by Obie Award-winning writer/director Shayok Misha Chowdhury in collaboration with his mother, physicist Bulbul Chakraborty, is a performance memoir that intertwines science and art. Chakraborty’s expertise in rheology—the study of how matter flows—serves as a metaphor for the fluid dynamics of family, culture, and identity. This innovative piece blends poetic songs by Bengali composer Rabindranath Tagore with personal narratives, offering a profound exploration of how things flow in both the physical and emotional realms.
Your support is invaluable in allowing Ma-Yi Theater Company to continue its mission of uplifting AANHPI lives and artists. In a time when diverse stories are more vital than ever, your contribution helps us create spaces where these narratives can thrive and resonate with audiences far and wide.
Thank you for being an integral part of our community. Together, we can bring these powerful stories to the stage and ensure that AANHPI voices are heard and celebrated.
With gratitude,
Ralph B. Peña
