TEENAGE DICK lead, Gregg Mozgala, is nominated for Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Actor.
Not only is GREGG MOZGALA the leading role in Ma-Yi Theater Company’s upcoming production of TEENAGE DICK at The Public, he was recently nominated for Outstanding Actor in a Play, Cost of Living, along with his cast member Katy Sullivan. Additionally, The play, produced by Manhattan Theatre Club in association with Williamstown Theatre Festival and written by Martyna Majok and was nominated for OUTSTANDING PLAY! The Off-Broadway League announced nominees for the 2018 Lortel Awards for Outstanding Achievement Off-Broadway on Friday. This year’s awards ceremony, to be hosted by Laura Benanti and Jason Jones, who appear together on TBS’s The Detour, is set for Sunday, May 6, at the NYU Skirball Center.
Ma-Yi is pleased to be working with such a talented and diverse actor, and was happy to share with Gregg in the Lortel Nominations, with 9 nominations towards it’s recent production of KPOP for Outsanding Musical and eight other awards.
In ‘COST OF LIVING’ which also was selected in NY TIMES best of Theater 2017. two disabled characters and two caretakers make up the cast of Martyna Majok’s gripping play, directed by Jo Bonney for Manhattan Theater Club. But which is which? John, who has cerebral palsy, is a rich, bratty grad student; Ani, a double amputee, is a hilariously foul-mouthed North Jersey terror. The people who help them, Eddie and Jess, have different problems. “Cost of Living,” which could have been an identity play about people with disabilities, is thus so much greater: a play about disabilities with people.
Recently, Mogzala has also been cast in Caryl Churchill’s, “Light Shining In Buckinghamshire” at New York Theatre Workshop. Gregg won the 2017 “Champion Of Change” NYC Mayor’s Office for Advancement of Persons with Disabilities and produced and starred in the film about dance and therapy “Enter The Fawn”.
In TEENAGE DICK, Mozgala will lead us into the life of Richard, a high-schooler with cerebral palsy and his sometimes creepy Shakespearean (Richard III) way of speaking. Richard is determined to have his revenge and make his name by becoming president of the senior class. But as he manipulates and crushes the obstacles to his electoral success, Richard finds himself faced with a decision he never expected would be his to make: is it better to be loved or feared?
The play comes to The Public Theater on June 20, 2018 and runs through July 15.
Written by our resident playwright and Lab do-director Mike Lew, TEENAGE DICK is directed by two-time Tony Award-nominee Moritz von Stuelpnagel (Hand to God and Present Laughter), and choreographed by Jennifer Weber (KPOP), TEENAGE DICK is presented as a new fully realized production, having been developed by The Public Theater as part of its 2016 Public Studio Series.
TEENAGE DICK was commissioned and developed by The Apothetae of which Mozgala is Artistic Director, a company dedicated to plays that explore and illuminate the “Disabled Experience.” This current production by Ma-Yi Theater Company is part of The Lark’s Venturous Playwright Fellowship Program, funded by Venturous Theater Fund of the Tides Foundation.
